This is the third umbrella we've bought from Hayneedle, and the second of this style. The umbrella material included in the base price is cheap and thin, more like a tent fabric. I learned this the hard way, but had a more expensive umbrella cover from a previous buy, which I easily changed on site for the one included. Voila! Next order I paid the additional hefty fee for the linen-like fabric, and still came in at a reasonable price. The difference in shade and appearance using the more expensive fabric is well worth it! From thin, shiny, and cheesy to thick and shielding.

I do own one Item#: GLT012 which is a more expensive model, with a modest price increase for better quality fabric. I cannot tell the umbrella poles, cranks, strings, mechanisms, or upgraded fabrics apart. The more expensive one seems virtually the same as this one I am reviewing. I suggest buying this model and paying the extra cost for a thicker, textured umbrella fabric.

We use three of these for UV and heat protection in the 125 degree summer sun and they work very well, cutting the light, heat, and offering a wide area of shade, which brings the cobblestone temperature down considerably, and will prevent hedges and flowers from scorching. You can walk barefoot in the shaded area, for example.

The tilt mechanism has never failed but does not give much of an angle. The ad photo of the umbrella tilted is showing it at its maximum. You crank past the point that seems sensible, crank til you think it'll break, then the top tilts. Careful which base you buy as you may have to move the umbrella around to beat the sun rather than relying on the tilt to shade you. Always loosen the pipe screws when changing the direction of the umbrella tilt. Do not simply twist the umbrella and pipe as one, as this will just unscrew the threaded pipe from the base and before you know it, the umbrella will be in your lap. Also, when assembling any threaded base, spray first with Silicone Spray. NEVER use WD-40 as it will attract dust and grit and will cement the pipe and the base. [I learned these things during 25 yrs of buying umbrellas and eventually asking the right people the right questions instead of doing it all wrong and wondering who the idiot was. Now I know.]

Sunshade provided is very good. Wind gusts over 30mph CAN lift the umbrella from the pipe, tear it right past the two screws, and send it sailing. I have retrieved ours from over a seven foot wall, and trust me, a flying umbrella is a javelin and very dangerous. Always tie the umbrella closed if you have wind warnings of 10mph and up. Just hanging closed and untied offers enough luft to pick the umbrella up and hurl it. I definitely recommend this particular umbrella, with upgraded fabric, but would send it back with the cheap fabric included in the lowest price.

Last thing, the *good* fabric will absolutely outlast the mechanism, just as the warranties imply. If your umbrella pole fails, i.e. the pulley ropes unravel or break, which they will eventually, buy this model at cheapest price, remove the fabric and place the old fabric, the good more expensive one you paid extra for, on the new mechanism, and add the new finial. One umbrella will outlast two umbrella poles.

Our son hasn't used the patio umbrella just yet due to colder weather but the ordering, delivery was very prompt with no hassle. Although this was a gift for our son we've had one at our lake home we've used for several years. Material holds up great, no wind problems but the lowering mechanism is on the "fritts" and we have to help it go up/down by hand otherwise I'd have given it a 5 star.

This is a beautiful umbrella that is large and sturdy. The color I chose was Henna. The picture does not do it justice. We have the umbrella on our very large patio table and it completely covers it. It is easy to open and close. I'm sure we'll get many years of use from it.
